News:

Believe it or not, these last couple of months I've stumbled over some new ikky-thing from Hoglan for all of you vultures! Fucking yeah! NEWS is what other sites call it - outragious!
Rumors about Dark Angel getting back together seem to be true - I don't think that they've started practicing or writing new material, but I'm not the one to say, if they havn't started yet I doubt how they get the time, since it seems that the tour we've all been dreaming about is on it's way: S.Y.L and Ocean Machine - Europe May/June!!! Looks like Devin night all night, and no punk ass newschool hardcore band is going to fuck this tour up (our regards to Stuck Mojo :() - see HDR newsletter/homepage for dates.
Gene has recorded a CD with Swedish Black Metal band "Old Man's Child" - To give my personal opinion, I think that the band plainly stinks - I saw them live a few months ago and it sounded pretty boaring to me - but I'm excited to hear what Gene can put into them - and as a fan called Michael Bushur so beuatifuly put it: "He is the first noted musician to crossover..." - AMEN!
Heavy Devy Records (Devin Townsend & family) have started up a new project called "Infinity", freturing Gene on drums. The recordings start next year, and it should be released in early spring - keep up to date on HDR's site, as it won't be released anywhere execpt in Australia and Japan (it can be ordered from HDR). According to the news letter, the style from Gene's side is suppose to be very different from anything he has ever done before.

There is also a new S.Y.L. record comming up, called "No Sleep Till Bedtime". -It has allready been recorded, but unfortunatly, it seems that Century Media are having problems with their promotion of S.Y.L. (First the canceling of the European Tour, and now problems with releasing this - the only release thats sudden is Australia by Shock Records). The CD is a live album mastered by Devin Townsend himself.

Thats it! I hope to bring you more News soon, keeping this site more up to date. Untill then, keep an open eye out for others of Devin Townsend's amazing projects, featuring names as TOOL, Trent Reznor, some wacky cartoon caracter and members of Metallica (?!?).

Why?

When I checked out the internets drumming section, I found five (5) pages devoted to just one drummer (two, I think, was about Ringo Starr, currently the narrator of "Tomas the happy tank-engine and Friends"). Not one of these pages was devoted to any of the drummers I liked to refer to as even "fair". In my discontempt, I had to make the hard choice, of which drummer deserved a homepage the most. A lot of drummers was in my mind (none mentioned, none forgotten!), but the only one I could think of who have been a part of creating modern drumming, and still does, is the great Gene Hoglan. With the - maybe - greatest drumrecord EVER (City), he has proven himself more then worthy for the title as the worlds (if not gratest - ) meanest drummer. Gene is the meanest, fastest, tightest, most groovy, thrashy and technical pulse ever, and he even has a taste for new and up-coming things!

Gene Hoglan faqs (from the SYL faq. Author: Mario)

This is one qustion I get alot; How big are Genes balls? I went to investigate, and found out that Danish ex-Invocator guitarplayer, "Perle" had found out, while holding a camera in his hand, daring their support to Dark Angel in 1992. Thanks to Søren Tingkær at Progress Records, for bringing this to my attention, and buy Invocators album, "Dying To Live" from the same label!

Gene Hoglan was born on August 31, 1967 in the Mexican Cantina in Dallas where his mother worked. Genes family means a lot to him. His sister, Lisa, was and still is the greatest inspiration to him. Genes Dad was in Mariachi band and Gene was born while Dad was on stage. Father claimed baby wasn't his: "no son of mine would be that ugly." Genetic background: Nordic, Mexican, Syrian, and native American Indian.

While growing up, Gene listened to: US AM top 40 from 69-76 first song bought - No One to Depend On - Santana album - Bill Cosby - I Started Out as a Child.

Started in the LA music scene by working with bands like great White, WASP, and hanging with Mötley Crüe. Gene was a crew member for Slayer, and did interviews with the band. He held Dave Lombardo's bass drums in place in the studio while he recorded 'Chemical Warfare'.

Place of residence - Long Beach and Byron's (Zimmers Hole & S.Y.L bassplayer) couch.

Drumkits:

Gene mainly uses Tama at the time - he has also played with Pearl Master series earlyer when he had his boat propella (instaed of a cymbal). On Testament he played dw drums. The reason could very well be, that the band wanted the same crisp in the drumsound, that bands like White Zombie* and Invocator have got (both dw drummers), and Testament had on their last album. - To back that up, there is a rumor that Testament is sponsored by dw.

Dark angel:

Formed in Los Angeles, California in the early '80s. Dark Angel was one of the first bands to mix Death Metal, Thrash and Speedmetal. Gene gave this band a more individual sound then the other bands, who all at this time wanted to play faster and faster. Due to his impressive and intense dubblepedal drumming. Gene played fast (since this was the style), but separated him self with his also groovy, technical and tight bassdrum-drumming.
With this band, Gene changed the style of doublebass-drumming into something more fast AND different. A drummer who have TRULY been inspired, is Paul Bostaph (Forbidden, Slayer), people call this guy "mini Hoglan", because he is about as fast, but isn't as big, or powerful as Gene.

Gene plays all drums AND rhythm guitar on all the Dark Angel albums, unless else is noted.

Dark Angel albums and tracks:

"Darkness Descends" 1986

The track, Merciless Death, is released in 1997 on the compilation "Speed Kills III" - Under One Flag (FLAG #17)

"Ultimate Revenge II" 1988 - Soundtrack, various artists.

Recorded on October 23rd, 1988 at Philadelphia's Trocadero Theatre. The soundtrack to a video of the same title, which supposedly has 5 tracks not found on the video. Other bands on the record: Raven, Death, Faith Or Fear, Forbidden

"Leave Scars" 1989

The first album with Ron Rinehart as the vocalist, "Leave Scars" represents a significant change in sound for the band. Gene Hoglan takes over writing all the lyrics, and plays Drums, Rhythm Guitar AND Assorted instruments and backing vocals

"Three Way Thrash" 1989 (Stand VCI Entertainment)

This is not an album release but a concert video for a performance at Hammersmith Odeon on April 10th, 1989 that featured the bands DAM, Candlemass, and Dark Angel. This was made during their "Live Scars" tour (the photos on the cover of the "LIVE Scars" album below come from this concert video, apparently).

"LIVE Scars" 1990 (Relativity Records)

Recorded on April 22nd, 1989 at the Country Club in Reseda, California by the Westwood One mobile unit. Special thanks given to Jim Durkin, who left the band after their previous album. This record funnily features The Front Row Of The Country Club as Backing vocals

"Time Does Not Heal" 1991 (Relativity Records)

The last album that the band recorded. Also considered the best. This was the first time I ever heard Gene, and I don't think that the stuff he did here for drumming can be said in words. Gene doesn't do as many fills these days, as he did back then - however his simple 4/4 (the only thing he really plays before City) get a little mainstream and simple from time to time.

"Decade Of Chaos" 1992 (Relativity Records) - Compilation release

A compilation of tracks, but no new tracks. The band breaks up, when first frontsinger Rob Rinehart leaves the others in 1992, and Gene Hoglan leaves shortly after.

NOTE:All the Dark Angel Tracks are released by COMBAT/Relativity Records unless else is noted

Death:

As Gene Hoglan states in the interview this issue; "To a lot of people, we created death metal, so we can redefine it if necessary." And redefine it they do, though the changes aren't extreme. There are some intricate riffs in here, evident that there was MUCH time and effort spent in this newest release. The acoustic pieces in a song like "Empty Words" show a band that is willing to keep their albums fresh and invigorating. Even the brutal vocals haven't been toned down, and this time around Chuck Schuldiner utilizes one of my most favorite, but seldom used in death metal, effects: the echo! Yes, as if Chuck's voice wasn't brutal enough, the extended use of echo tends to make his bloodcurdling screams slowly fade from disc into your cranium! Once again, the lyrics are more tuned into the horrific reality of society than cheesy horror movies. Quite an outstanding release, even Gene Hoglan's drumming is top notch, as we all remember his outstanding work for the legendary Dark Angel.

There you have it! From the Vibrations of Doom magazine! Read the interview with Gene!

Death albums:

"Individual Thought Patterns" 1993 (Relativity)

"Symbolic" 1995 (Roadrunner)

Naphobia "Of Hell" 1995

Guested on the tracks "The UnGodly", "Technical Fool" and "As Anceints Evolve" while he was in Florida doing Symbolic.

After Death breaks up, Gene does a few guest appearances. These are a little hard to find, and I wouldn't be surprised, if a few came up along the way. Therefor, I ask you to send me a mail, if you have a clue to something he did. Thank you!

SYLStrapping Young Lad "City" 1997 (Century Media)

Devin Townsend

The band that Gene is playing in currently. Gene here proves that he is the tightest, the fastest and the best! With a modern industrial production, Gene and Devin Townsend produces a sound that is both dirty, clean and groovy with plenty of samples. Gene plays so amazingly cool, that you have to ask your self, if he at any time uses a drumkit.
Hear some sound samples.
CITY

Testament "Demonic" 1997

Gene did this album as a guest (like John Tempesta did with Low). He continues his new style, but there hasn't put as much time into the drumtracks or the production as SYLs album. The sound sounds a bit like it's recorded live.

The SYL reviews

An interviewer wrote this to the Dark Angel page:

"Gene was a great interview. I remember meeting him later that year. Don Doty was sick and couldn't sing. Gene was sick as well, but he sang in addition to playing the drums. I thought he was gonna drop dead after the show."

Don't send fan-mail to me, send it to the boys themselves - Heavy Devy Records (mail) Devin Townsend's record company. All the lads can be contacted through here - word is that they write you back. I myself have no personal contact to Gene, so if you think of a question, setup-thinges, etc. mail me if you get the answer from him
